Easy Way to Beat Anxiety: Play it Away!
A Review of the Book “Play It Away”
Charlie Hoehn wrote “Play it Away” after he found the deceptively simple and enjoyable solution to his years of struggling with anxiety: Play. Previously, he had had worked with many best-selling authors like Tim Ferriss and Tucker Max on countless projects including books, conferences, podcasts, etc. Like many Type-A workaholics can relate, he sacrificed nearly everything for his career including relationships, health, sleep, vacations, you name it. Despite the sacrifices and stress he endured, he seemed to have everything going for him on the outside as he earned a stellar reputation among top authors and entrepreneurs. Little did they know the suffering and anxiety that was brewing inside him until he revealed it in a blog post on his blog one day.
I love Charlie’s direct and no-nonsense writing style in this book. He openly speaks of his feelings and even the failures he faced in his journey to rid his anxiety. For example, after he suffered his first panic attack, he went to his doctor and she prescribed him Xanax, probably what most of us first got when we approached the doc about our persistent jitters. It was nearly a Hallelujah moment for him until he did some research and found that the withdrawal symptoms would even further compound his anxiety. (Maybe he should’ve given L-Theanine a try but I digress…)
At this point, Charlie was desperate for a cure to his anxiety and the medication was not an acceptable solution, so he sought out all of the commonly known treatments touted by doctors, experts, the media, etc. including:
- Changing his diet.
- Fasting
- Exercise/Yoga
- Mediation
- Therapy
- Acupuncture
- And many others.
He found that a few of the treatments he explored helped, a few made things even worse, but most of them had little effect. He goes into further detail about his experience with some of the treatments in his book. At only 168 pages, you can easily finish this book in a single sitting in the afternoon or evening – quite a small investment of your time and money for potentially life-changing advice on effectively reducing your anxiety. Even today, I still refer back to this book if I find my anxiety flaring up again from time to time.
