Matcha is the finely ground powder of green tea which first appeared during the Tang Dynasty in China and later grew to popularity in Japan. While Matcha offers the convenience of quickly dissolving in hot water without the hassle of leaves and stems compared to regular green tea, its biggest benefit lies in its versatility. It’s a crucial ingredient in Japanese tea ceremonies and has recently caught on as a dye and flavor in foods such as ice cream, mocha, soba noodles, candies, smoothies, etc. Although some Chinese and Japanese foods include Matcha as an ingredient, you can innovatively incorporate it into your own culture’s cuisines as well!

Green tea contains L-Theanine which is responsible for inducing relaxation without fatigue. Matcha contains even more L-Theanine per unit weight than traditional green teas due to its special preparation technique: the tea bushes are covered for up to 20 days before harvest. This even further stimulates the production of L-Theanine!

Due to the anti-Anxiety focus on this site, the only Matcha I’ll include on my site are the caffeine-free varieties. Keep in mind that although regular Matcha contains far more caffeine than traditional green teas, it tends to be released into the body continuously over several hours which lessens the probability of experiencing the familiar “crash” associated with coffee and traditional teas.
